Educational Learning
What are some learning/educational games to play with my 3 year old son?

leslie b-thank you so much for all the great ideas. I have something new to work with him on today.

Oooh, great question! Thanks for being a caring, involved mom! Play counting and sorting games.
*Let him match socks out of the laundry basket, or sort them into groups: put all the white ones here, all the blue ones here, etc. Now can you count how many red ones there are? He can also help set the table. Count four forks and put them on four napkins.
*Play I Spy (3 year old version!). I spy something that is white and it makes a circle and it’s on the table. Yes! It’s a plate!
*Or I am thinking of someone who has short brown hair and brown eyes. He’s a boy, and he’s wearing… Yes you guessed it, it’s you!
*What’s the first letter of his first name? Show him what it looks like, write it for him, then find it everywhere, in books, on signs, on cereal boxes etc. When you’re sure he recognizes his J, go on to the next letter until he recognizes each letter of his name individually.
*Read, read, read to him! (Maximum important!!)
*Play verbal sequencing games. Time to get ready for bed. First we take a bath. Then what do we do? Good, put your pjs on! Now what? Brush your teeth? Great! Read a story! You choose one.
*At the grocery, he can help you choose some orange vegetables. Carrots? Ok, I like carrots too! Be sure you differentiate between veggies and fruits. He will catch on.
*Get him some play dough, or better yet, find a recipe for home-made play dough on line and make it together. This will teach math skills, and playing with the play dough will develop fine motor strength and control that he will need for writing.
*Provide crayons, pencils and paper and encourage him to write and draw. Don’t worry if he just scribbles or makes lines and shapes at first. That’s how writing starts, and it’s a great early education activity!
A lot of people like to use computer-type games. I personally prefer personal interaction because it helps to develop language skills and social skills too. Don’t be afraid to use new words. Let him know that if he hears a word he doesn’t understand, he should ask. He will develop an excellent vocabulary this way!

Teacher Learning for Educational Change

Teacher Learning for Educational Change

$39.06

"How many teachers (including academics) understand the dynamic relationship between learning and teaching? In this highly readable account of teacher learning for educational change, Hoban provides both the theory and the detailed examples for a rich and engaging new perspective on teachers’ professional learning. This is essential reading for all who would improve their own teaching or provide meaningful support and leadership for such teachers." – Tom Russell, Professor of Education, Queen’s University (Canada) "Hoban pays careful attention to the dynamic interplay between personal, social and situated conditions for learning in his Professional Learning System by valuing extended time frames and learning communities in his quest for real teacher change. But beyond his theory, persuasive arguments and compelling examples is the learning through reflection that he embodies himself in this book. A wonderful read." – J. John Loughran, Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia This book presents a new mindset for teacher learning and educational change. When viewed from a conventional mechanistic paradigm, educational change is a linear step-by-step process that is supported by a simplistic approach to teacher learning. Although this approach often produces disappointing results, rarely is an alternative one proposed. What is new in this book is that educational change and teacher learning are viewed from a paradigm based on complexity theory, assuming that change is a nonlinear process that needs to be supported by a framework for long-term teacher learning. The central question of this book, therefore, is ‘What conditions will help to establish a framework forlong-term teacher learning to support educational change?’ To address this question, a systems thinking approach is used to draw together ideas from existing learning perspectives into a new theoretical framework called a Professional Learning System. This framework is not a formula, but a new mindset to help us understand the nonlinear dynamics of educational change and teacher learning.

Lifelong Learning and the New Educational Order

Lifelong Learning and the New Educational Order

$27.16

Lifelong learning remains an explosive policy issue. In Britain and elsewhere, governments are actively encouraging citizens to learn and to apply their learning across their lifespan. Yet governments often seem uncertain over the best means of achieving this desirable goal. John Field’s book explores the background to this sudden rise of interest among policy-makers, maps existing patterns of participation, evaluates the measures being developed to promote lifelong learning, and assesses the prospects of achieving a viable learning society. This second edition to this influential book has been fully revised and updated to take account of recent research and policy developments. It is required reading for academics with a scholarly interest in adult learning, as well as for teachers, managers and others who want to understand one of the most critical and fast-moving areas of modern educational policy.
